On our Outback Stations Safari we had hoped to visit Melangata, Murchison House & Wooleen Stations but some of the roads were closed due to heavy rains so we only got to check out two of them! Murchison & Melangata are both excellent destinations for city slickers seeking a bit of adventure with some basic creature comforts & we highly recommend them. We already reported on our Murchison experience, so sit back & let us tell you about Melangata.

Again it's a place with an interesting history - the homestead is the only private residence to be designed by famous architect & priest Monsignor John Hawes over 100 years ago - it even has its own tiny chapel! Situated about an hour out of Yalgoo, Melangata Station (put the emphasis on the second syllable when you say it) is about half the size of Murchison but still huge when compared to a 1/4 acre block!

This rural sheep station is owned & managed by Jo Clews & Ken Darnell. While they only run a few animals on the property these days it still has oodles of country atmosphere & there's plenty to see & do.

You can take a guided walking tour of the homestead & get a feel for the real Australia of days gone by, take a guided 4x4 tour, learn how to cook over a campfire from Jo your hostess (who's also known as the "Camp Oven Queen" & is the author of several outdoor cookbooks), go for a stroll around the property or gather round the communal campfire to hear some yarns.

Melangata's also a great base to explore the mysterious Dalgaranga Meteorite Crater or the (now abandoned) Dalgaranga Homestead, check out the magnificent night skies or stay for a coupla nights if you're in the Midwest to admire the wildflowers in spring.

You'll need a 4WD to get there but there are plenty of unpowered camping spots & access to toilets & hot showers once you arrive. If you don't wanna camp you can stay at the homestead in a nice comfy bed with your meals provided but book ahead! There's also a new 'glamping' option in eco-tents.

Jo & Ken have been mates of ours for a long time so tell them the gypsies sent you when you book & you'll be guaranteed a warm welcome!
