What's a 'Tag-Along-Tour'?

You'll be independent, but not alone!

On a Global Gypsies’ 4WD tag-along-tour you'll be part of a small group of private and/or hired vehicles travelling in a small convoy behind an escort vehicle, led by an expert guide. You’ll explore the outback - independent, but not alone.

The routes we have selected to such outstanding remote destinations as the Kimberley, Rudall River, Canning Stock Route, Holland Track, Great Australian Bight, Karijini National Park, Ayers Rock (Uluru), Tracks of Len Beadell & more - combine challenge and adventure with the incomparable rugged beauty of Australia's natural attractions.

We usually cover a maximum of about 300 kms a day on a combination of approved bitumen, sand & dirt tracks with several two-night stops. We carry an EPIRB (electronic positioning indicating radio beacon), a Royal Flying Doctor Service Radio and a satellite phone, and participating vehicles need to have a vehicle-mounted two-way radio.

If you don’t have your own 4WD vehicle or two-way radio we can hire one for you at special rates. And you don’t need previous off-road experience to join our tours – 4WD practice and guidance is part of the package!

Catering

On most tag-along-tours we employ a Safari Hostess, tow our catering trailer & provide quality catering.

Catering on tag along tours

For a very reasonable cost of just $50 per person per day, we'll do all the menu planning and the grocery shopping and supply three delicious and nutritious meals a day plus morning tea along with quality crockery, cutlery and catering equipment. We just ask that you help with food preparation & washing up & bring your own alcoholic beverages. Gathering together for a delicious hot dinner is a great way to end a funfilled day with new friends. It also allows you to relax and really enjoy your holiday without worrying about purchasing & storing groceries or preparing meals on the road! With our custom-designed 4WD catering trailer - a special kitchen on wheels - we can prepare meals quickly, professionally and hygienically. We can also cater for special preferences and dietary requirements.

If you self-cater (a necessity on the Canning Stock Route), you plan and prepare your own meals, buy and store your groceries, carry your own catering equipment and clean your own dishes.

Accommodation

Accommodation is under the stars in your tent or 4WD camper trailer in a combination of camp grounds, caravan parks & bush camps. Supply your own camping gear or we can hire it for you. Hot showers & toilet facilities are usually available except in ‘bush camps’ and we have a solar shower & bush loo for these occasions.

What Do I Need to Bring?

You need a robust 4WD vehicle, two-way radio & camping gear (or a 4WD camper trailer) – BYO or hire from us. Before each safari, we host a Pre-Departure Workshop to discuss the itinerary, preparation, packing list, answer questions, issue a Pre-Departure Kit and inspect private vehicles. Clients unable to attend receive a Pre-Departure Kit in the post and we phone you to go through it. Looking After the Environment

Global Gypsies has a strict environmental management policy. We use only approved 4WD tracks on our tours and training courses & have a strong environmental focus. We are licensed to operate by the Department of Environment & Conservation and the Department of Transport and have national accreditation from Tourism Council Australia.
